Held in Heric a small town in the Loire Valley, the tandem race is without doubt a very bizarre event. Eighty teams six per team, there are first second and third prizes for the best fancy dress, best decorated tandem, best animation (effects) and the furthest distance covered in the 24 hours. This year the theme was modes of transport, we chose to go as Le Pearle Noire Pirate ship, complete with fancy dress blacked out teeth and beer tankards. We looked and acted the part! There were a number of excellent entries this year including a helicopter & The Titanic which was made up of two halves cycling round together.
Before the "race" there is a parade lap of the town. 5pm Saturday it all kicks off. We rode Le Pearle round for an hour complete, then stripped her down and went for it......... All through the night, swapping over every 10 laps (15 miles).... Fireworks, a disco and a live band are all laid on to keep the spectators (2k) amused and offer light relief to the non cycling team members.... Oh and beer.... lots of beer. Possibly why some "modes of transport" couldn't keep in a straight line....... Round and round the 1.5 mile closed road circuit we went.... 243 times... We came a very respectable 8th place overall, which we were all very pleased (as newts) about. We raised over £1600 which was divided between three charities. £550 going to ARC. Anyone fancies it next year, we could always do with support.... or maybe you fancy joining the team. If not, then why not simply put your hand in your pocket and help with the fund raising...... Next years theme is "France through the ages".... Gillotine anyone ?
